Course of the Week: Electrolysis!

Our Course of the week this week is... ELECTROLYSIS!

Here at Omni Academy of Beauty we offer many different courses, one being electrolysis.

Electrolysis is a permanent way of hair removal, consisting of a small probe put into the hair follicle, and then a small charge of energy is put through the follicle. This is to try and destroy the growth center of the hair.

The main areas which are usually treated with electrolysis:

For Women:

  • Facial Areas - top lip, chin, neck, cheeks, eyebrows.
  • Breasts
  • Abdomen
  • Underarms
  • Bikini Line
  • Legs
  • Fingers and Toes
For Men:
  • Upper arm
  • Around the ears
  • Top of the nose
  • Eyebrows
  • Top of the back
  • Cheeks above the beard line
  • Around the edges of the beard
  • And anywhere where ingrown hairs may occur.

For transgender/Transsexual females:
  • Often full beard removal
  • Some chest removal
  • Pre-surgery genital hair removal

Does Electrolysis hurt?

Electrolysis' pain depends on your pain threshold, the sensation of the treatment is a mild warming or heat and leaves you with a discomfort. The discomfort varies according to the area being treated, previous method of hair removal, your hair and skin type, and also your pain threshold.

Although Electrolysis can be changed to each different client by adapting the intensity, timings, probe type and also the choice of method used. The three types include:
  • Galvanic
  • Thermolysis
  • Blend
Galvanic is where a chemical reaction is used to destroy the hair follicle. The natural chemical used acts to destroy the cells around the hair follicle to effectively permanently disable the follicle and prevent hair from growing again. The chemical still works some time after the needle is removed. This type of electrolysis is very effective although it is time consuming as it takes around 3 minutes per hair usually this method is used on thick hair like beards or any body hair.

Thermolysis is where a radio energy is used to destroy the hair follicle with a high frequency. Due to the high frequency, it vibrates the hair follicle which irritates the water molecules surrounding the base. Heat is then produced and it thickens the fluid, destroying the target cell tissue. This treatment type is quicker, taking a couple of seconds per hair although it is not as effective as galvanic and is normally used for fine hair.

Blend is a combination of both Galvanic and Thermolysis. The galvanic current produces acidic lye, while the high frequency vibrates and heats up the hair follicle. As it heats up, the strength of the lye increases and as this vibrates due to the thermolysis, is dispersed and absorbed into the hair follicle. The blend method is not as quick as thermolysis, as it takes around 7 seconds per hair, although it is still quicker than the galvanic method. This method is best used for fine body and facial hair.

When Electrolysis is commonly used:

Electrolysis is often used when there is overgrowth of hair in a particular place or if there is a hormone unbalance. Often people with Polycystic Ovaries have electrolysis to get rid of any unwanted hair. Polycystic Ovaries is a condition which affects how your ovaries work. The main features of this condition is:
  • Cysts that develop in your ovaries
  • Your ovaries not regularly releasing eggs
  • High Levels of 'Male Hormones' are released into your body, which is where the unwanted hair comes from.
The unwanted/overgrowth of hair is found usually on the face, chest, back or backside.

How many treatments you need:

This will be different for everybody, you will have many regular appointments over a period of time and as you feel more confident and as you start to see a difference then you will then be able to say whether you think you need any more treatments. Your hair thickness, skin sensitivity, dryness and other factors will determine how fast your hair grows back and how many treatments you will need.
